Removal of tattoo
Removal of tattoo
Tattoos are a beautiful and personal decoration of the body. Unfortunately, tattoos can also be regretted over time, and for many years this was something you had to live with. Nowadays, however, it is possible to have the tattoos or the tattoo you have come to regret removed, when you were on holiday with friends or when you were somewhere else in life.
Below you can read more about what you can do and what you need to be aware of if you want to have a tattoo removed.Â
How to remove your tattoo with laser treatment
The best way to remove a tattoo is by laser treatment. The way the treatment works is that the laser hits a colour pigment in the tattoo. This breaks down the pigment into smaller pieces that the body can absorb. The residue is then excreted from the body via urine, sweat, evaporation or other waste products from the body.
For the best results, it is important to use the right laser for tattoo removal. If you do not use a so-called pico-second laser or YAG laser, you risk that these alternatives form more scar tissue than is good. We always recommend that you find a tattoo removal clinic that has been in business for a long time.
How many laser treatments does it take before my tattoo is removed?
When you need laser treatment, it takes up to 45 minutes per treatment. The tattoo you want removed will not disappear after this one treatment. You can expect to be lasered between 5-10 times before your tattoo is completely gone. It is also recommended that at least six weeks elapse between each treatment. This is because during this period the skin is given a chance to heal and remove the pigments that have been dissolved during the laser treatment. The break also reduces the risk of permanent pigment changes. Â
Are there consequences to having a tattoo removed?
Unfortunately, as mentioned above, having your tattoo removed by laser treatment is not without consequences. The laser being used can, in some cases, adversely affect the skin. Unfortunately, there is a risk of minor fire damage, which may later lead to scarring. This is a fairly common consequence of having a tattoo removed by laser treatment.
In addition, the laser can also burn off the skin’s pigment cells because it affects a substance called melanin. This means that you can get a whiter skin tone in the area where your tattoo used to be. It may even happen that your old tattoo leaves a negative imprint.
Fortunately, the side effects of tattoo removal are mainly cosmetic. So you don’t have to worry about any health consequences of having a tattoo removed.
At Painfree, we can ease the pain if you want a tattoo removed
At Painfree, we carry a wide selection of pain relieving creams to ease your pain when getting a new tattoo. If it’s the case that you need to have a tattoo removed, our creams are also ideal for this purpose. It is a good idea to apply the cream an hour before you are to undergo laser treatment.
Our creams don’t make the laser treatment of your tattoo completely painless, but they do ease the pain, making the whole treatment more manageable. Here you can see our range of pain relief creams.
After treatment, it’s a good idea to wear loose clothing – this could be sweatpants or a hoodie. Just like when you get a new tattoo, it can be uncomfortable if your clothes rub against the open wound. It can even be bad for the healing process if, for example, you wear a pair of tight jeans that reopen the wound when you walk around. If your wound is not allowed to heal properly, the final result may be negatively affected.
An alternative to tattoo removal
If it’s not because you’ve generally regretted getting a tattoo, it’s also possible to get a so-called cover-up. This means you’ll get a new tattoo – which you’ll hopefully like more – on top of your old one.
This is a method some people resort to if they still think tattoos are a beautiful way to decorate the body, but don’t feel the previous tattoo suits them anymore. Most tattoo artists have different creative solutions to make you happy with the decoration on your body again.
